Flashy Nails

One young lady's attempt to master decent nail art!

So Sorry! August 11, 2009

Hey guys (if any of you are still there!)  I’m really sorry about the massive delay between posts.  It’s my busiest time of the year wedding wise at the moment, and that doesn’t just mean one day at the wedding, it also means nearly a week of editing hundreds of pictures.  So I’m tired, and when I have done pics of my nails I haven’t opened them in Photoshop to resize them etc cos I’ve had loads of wedding photos open in there already and it’s just been crazy!

Anyway, I’ve trimmed all my nails right down now – no white tip showing on any of them at all 😦 because I had like 3 breakages on one hand and it was just making me a little 😦 that all my nails were at different lengths so in a fit of pique I got out the nail clippers and they’ve all gone.  They better grow back stronger next time or there will be trouble!

Here’s a couple of manis I have done lately.  They only 2 good enough to have their picture taken!

Barry M Gold, Miss Sporty Silver, Konad Wine Red and plate M21 (I think)

I quite liked this mani ^^ but I found the colours made my fingers look a little….I don’t know….grubby?!  I probably wouldn’t wear it again but it was ok.

Collection 2000 Hot Looks BMX Bandit (yes, again), Konad Princess Polish Blue Pearl, and a Fauxnad plate full nail design.

Can you tell I am a little bit obsessed with BMX Bandit?!  I love it.  This ^^ worked really well too as the BMX Bandit is a creme, smooth looking colour and the Blue Pearl Princess Polish has a nice amount of shimmer to it.  Lovely 🙂

Thanks for reading, please bear with me, I’m trying to get back up to speed!

Collection 2000 Hot Looks BMX Bandit/Hoola Hoop July 28, 2009

***Late post as I forgot to publish it when I typed it***

Can I just say I’m in LOVE with BMX Bandit? It is so pretty! I actaully wore it on of the days I didn’t post over the weekend/end of last week, it was part of a disastrous manicure (incidentally it was such a disaster and got taken off so quickly that I can’t even remember what it was!) So I took any excuse to use it again!

This is an alternating French using BMX Bandit and Hoola Hoop (Collection 2000 Hot Looks). Hoola Hoop seems a lot more neon on than in the bottle, but I really like it. It’s like Candyfloss pink 🙂

Yep evidence of both hands for a change!  I do have two y’know!

Anyway It looked a bit naked, and I seem to have sorta loast the touch with Konad a little lately so I didn’t want to go down that road, and then I remembered in my birthday haul I bought a bottle of silver glitter which hasn’t seen the light of day yet………so guess what….neon, funky french and glitter all in on?  “She didn’t!”  Oh but I did!

Yes I have a big dent in the middle finger 😦 The base coats had been left over 24 hours to dry, and there was a couple of hours between the first and second coats of glitter, but for some reason, once that second coat went on it took hours for them to set hard.  Also this gliter is packed with little holo pieces as well as regular silver glitter bits but I haven’t managed to capture them very well.
I’m currently suffering with a summer cold (which I hope goes away before Saturday as we are at another wedding) so I don’t think there will be any new nails tomorrow, but if I feel better there’s a chance so check back 🙂

Collection 2000 BMX Bandit/China Glaze OMG July 16, 2009

I wasn’t going to use another creme for a while as I’m a bit sick of them and their less than perfect application, and I was going to do a nice OMG with some Konad over the top.  But the more I thought about it, the more I thought it seemed a shame to cover up OMG, so I decided to do a nice simple French with Collection 2000 Hot looks BMX Bandit for the tips, and OMG for the base.  It came out amazing!  BMX Bandit hasn’t disaappointed at all – the colour is So amazing.  I did think there was nothing like it, but then I had another quick sweep over all the nail blogs I read this morning and realised it is very similar to Orly Cashmere Cardigan (by the way how stunning is that Manicure!) Anyway, I managed to dink my index and middle fingers on my right hand so the tips have a couple big dents in them, but my left hand looks good.

I should also mention that we have had a very overcast day here today so the OMG isn’t being given the chance to perform to it’s best 😦  and also, it took me about an hour to place all the rhinestones – yes they are all individually stuck down – I had quite the bad back when I was finished!  (I have 90 rhinestones in total, a massive 45 on each hand!)  Sorry in advance for the lack of tidying up!

I really love the BMX Bandit so much!  And it works so well with the silver of OMG, which is some consolation when it’s not behaving in it’s shimmery, holographic, OMG way!!

Thanks for reading 😀

Swatch – Button Moon July 15, 2009

Firstly, thank you all so much for your lovely comments on my wedding pictures!  It’s always nice to hear that your wedding dress is beautiful, and that you look like a great couple, so thank you!

Last night I swatched Button Moon.  I had received some Fimo Fruits from Ebay and really wanted to try them and it was a choice between Button Moon, BMX Bandit or Hoola Hoop for my base colour, and my lovely husband made the choice of Button Moon for me.  Unfortunately, I don’t have any pictures of it ‘naked’ as it were, because as soon as the second coat started to go tacky I pressed the fruit slices into it.

Application wasn’t as bad as I expected, maybe I’m getting used to cremes now, I just slop a big glob on there and sort of push it around my nail with the brush, rather than brushing it on.  It does mean there’s usually some clean-up to be done though and you don’t get a tidy like around the cuticle, as you’ll see from my pictures.

It is VERY like Streamer by George at Asda, in fact here is a picure of them side by side:

Streamer and Button Moon

Button Moon is a more aqua green that Streamer, which reminds me of a chalky colour.  Like hospital walls or something.  (I’ve never seen a hospital with walls that colour, it’s just the association I have!)

I’m a bit tired of cremes at the moment so I may hold off swatching any more of the Hot Looks (and I still have Barry M Green Glitter to swatch too), I fancy some China Glaze OMG I think 🙂

Thanks for reading 😀

Swatch/Review – Vixen July 12, 2009

I didn’t expect to be posting a new swatch today, as I only did the swatch of Dynasty yesterday, but when I went to bed last night I noticed I had some Dynasty on one of my cuticles and, being the little tinker I am ( I still haven’t grown out of picking at things I should’t, like scabs for example), I decided to pick it.  To my surprise and vague horror, I peeled almost the entire nail of polish off in one big sheet!  It happened on most of the other nails too.  Well needless to say this left with the desperate need for a new manicure, but not before giving my fingernails so tlc this morning.

So here we are, I’ve gone for Vixen today because when I was thinking about what I wanted to do with my nails, I was thinking I fancied something a little bit punky and I had the perfect idea, inspired by my husband, all will be revealed further down the post!

This is Vixen:

It’s a really nice colour, and didn’t have as much of the applcation issues that I found with Dynasty.  However ad you can see on the second picture, there were all these little lumps in the polish after I’d finished applying it.  Now I’m not sure if these are possibly just little bubbles, as I painted it on pretty thick.  I guess they probably are, but I was glad I was going to be putting Konad over the top of it.  It did the annoying going tacky really fast and then never seeming to dry much more than that, like Dynasty, although not quite as bad.  I left it alone for about an hour before I started the Konading process.

Ok so my Konad was inspired by a little gift that my husband brought me yesterday, which was this:

I love Hello Kitty, and Pucca and other such cute things (I’m wearing a My Little Pony Tshirt as I type this!) and yesterday he went climbing for the day with one of his brothers and a friend, in the Lake District.  He saw this at a Motorway Service Station on the way home and decided to buy me it.  Aww 🙂  So, I thought I’d do a punky Hello Kitty design today.  I have a rucksack which is black and fuchsia (and which I can’t find a picture of online and it’s buried in a cupboard upstairs so I can’t go take a picture of it) and it added to my inspiration……I won’t keep you in suspense any longer!!

I LOVE THIS KONADICURE!!!!!  I didn’t really like the colour of Vixen on its own, it’s not really a colour I’d wear just plain (although that doesn’t really matter as I never ever just wear my nails with just a base colour on them, there’s always something else) but now I’ve added to them, I’m amazed at the results!  They don’t look like something I’ve done at all.  I used the Fishnet from M57 as well as the Pastel Pink special polish, and the Hello Kitty from the Fauxnad plates with Black Special Polish.  Then I added hot pink and black rhinestones the the middle parts of Hello Kitty’s bows.  On some fingers the fishnet didn’t quite go on fully/tidily and neither did the HK’s but as I was after a punky look, I decided it didn’t matter.  I tried to be as random as I could manage (I’m really not good at random, I prefer patterns) when I was stamping the Kitty’s on my nails.  I’m really pleased with it.

I think it’s interesting how Konad TC changes the colour of the polish underneath it.  I’d be irritated if I had a polish I loved and it made it look a lot different but I like what it’s done to this colour.  It now kind of reminds me of my wedding dress:

Yes that’s the actual dress I wore when I got married.  I’m not one for tradition.  Anyway, enough of my babbling.  Posting that picture has made me want to show you guys more of my wedding pics! Would you like to see some?  Also It’s made me want to do one of those “All about you” survey things, would you be interested in reading it?

Thanks for reading (If you didn’t fall asleep by now!) 😀

Swatch/Review – Dynasty July 11, 2009

Given the trouble I had with Streamer, you’d think that I’d have had the sense to steer well clear of cremes.  But no.  I become blinkered with pretty polish colours.  It works like this: I see, I want.  That’s the entire thought process.  (Not the entire purchasing process, that usually involves several “pleading with my husband to let me spend more money on nail polish” and “waiting till we have more money” stages, but I digress.)  I saw these colours and without any regard for the nightmare that was Streamer, I bought 5 more cremes!

Dynasty is like a lilac version of Streamer, colour wise (if that makes any sense.)  It looks creamy and chalky all at the same time, subtle and pretty too.  It didn’t have quite as many horrific application issues as Streamer did (I’m only comparing the two because they are both fast dry pastel cremes – I suppose that’s asking for trouble now I think about it! – not because they’re the same brand, of course) but application was still not without streaks and issues.  I used the dip the brush, bring it out of the bottle without touching the inside of the bottle neck method, it seems to work, as long as you don’t make a mess with it on your cuticles, you do end up with a fairly even coat.

Collection 2000 claim this polish dries in 60 seconds.  I couldn’t agree less.  I wouldn’t say it’s particularly fast drying, in fact it has the annoying fault of most so called fast dry polishes – they are difficult to apply and then they don’t dry fast, they just go tacky and take ages to harden properly.  It took LONGER than it would have taken to wait for a normal polish before I dared to attempt a second coat, because I find with fast dry if it’s not quite dry and you start painting over it while it’s still sticky, you just get lots of drag and an uneven second coat.  I finished this manicure about an hour and a half ago and I know if I pressed the tip of one nail against the polish on another it would still leave a mark. (Although to be fair there is a thick coat of Konad TC on there too).

Anyway, if you can work around the tricky application and forget that this polish claims to be fast drying, you will be more than happy with if for its price, and the lovely lovely colour.  Here are some pics:

The bottom one is more true to the colour.  It was really hard to photograph because the sun was so bright, the colour was getting washed out in all of the pics, so there’s only those two of it plain.  But then I added some Konad and a nice little star rhinestone as well.  Mainly because I don’t think the colour particularly suits me, but interestingly it has darkened with the TC, so it looks a bit better.)  [Konad info: Psyche Pink and plate M33.]

For the record, I don’t really like this combination, I think the Psyche Pink is a little too neon to go with the Dynasty so my bad, and I also think the whole thing looks like something a Primary school kid would wear!

I’ll review another of the Hot Looks polishes next time.  Thanks for reading 🙂

New Polishes! Collection 2000 Hot Looks.

I’ve just treated myself – AGAIN – to some new polishes.  7 to be exact.  (Although one of them was a replacement bottle of Hello Sailor (despite it being less than halfway empty).  When I went to buy my bottle of Hello Sailor, I saw that Collection 2000 who make it have released a new range of mini polishes.  The range is called Hot Looks and according to Collection 2000’s website, they are 80’s inspired colours.  Admittedly, my branch of Superdug didn’t have every colour in by the time I saw it yesterday, but I don’t think I’d really say 80s was the first thing that ocurred to me when I saw the range.  I’d have classified it (and still would, actually) as a combination of neons and cremes all in really funky fresh brights.  Although now I’ve written that, I suppose that’s what the current 80s revival is all about so……..*shrugs*

These polishes are in 8ml bottles and they cost £1.75 at Superdrug but are currently on an offer where you can buy two for £2.99.  Either way, with or without the offer, they’re really not a bad price.  So, I bought six!  I have purchased Ninja (a mid green – neither neon nor creme, I’m inclined to say it’s a grass green but I think it’s a little dark for that), Button Moon (which looks a little like Streamer in the bottle – a mint green creme),  BMX Bandit (GORGEOUS looking cornflower blue creme), Dynasty (which I have swatched and reviewed, a lilac creme), Hoola Hoop (which is a sort of coral pink creme) and Vixen (a fuchsia glitter/shimmer, kind of neon I suppose).
